The Pace of July

I should know better by now, but I still come to July under the delusion that this summer month will in some way gear down the pace of ministry. It never does. I have come to conclusion that this is much like the lament I hear so often from retirees: “I thought that retiring would make life simpler!” Do any of you in retirement still believe that? Let me be clear: I encourage our busy congregation to rest. Very often schedules make room for vacation and down time right now. Take it! Rest is an essential part of a well-formed life. We recognize that in church, too. Some programs go into recess, and the pace of the church slows a bit. Remember, though, that while activity appears simpler on the surface, some very far-reaching church activities are taking place. Though sometimes unseen, what is happening right now will set the tone for us going forward. Here are a few things to bear in mind as we walk through the “lazy” days of July together:

Children and Student ministries are going full-steam. VBS is in full swing right now and the Youth gearing up for Youth Sunday and PASSPORT. Remain prayerfully attentive to the great things that are happening in Yates’ ministry to the next generation.

The Deacons are deliberating earnestly over the Facilities Planning Team recommendation. The Deacons are meeting in July to flesh out the motion developed at their last meeting with respect to the ambitious plan equip our church, and next generation, with the best possible resources for ministry. Pray for them as they discern the next steps to recommend to us all.

People are talking about leadership and committees. The Nominating Committee is working to develop our leadership slate for the coming year. Follow your passion! Be part of something that puts your gifts to work and gives you joy. Yates needs you. One of my favorite mottos is: “We Are in This Together.” “Together” includes you.

The Finance Committee is developing the 2015 church budget. Yates’ budget is more than numbers on a page. Each dollar represents a hopeful investment in ministry for Jesus’ sake to the church and the world. Participate by learning about what’s happening, asking questions, and taking responsibility for the choices to which we all commit when we adopt a ministry budget.

Your church still needs your support across the summer months. Know that I am grateful for all the ways you have contributed do far to the budget needs for 2014. It is easy to lose focus in these summer months. Let us all continue to prioritize financial support of the church this summer.

Remember, time away from Yates is not time away from God. Wherever you may find yourself in July, don’t neglect your relationship with God. If you are on vacation, find a church where you can worship. Take time for prayer. Take time for devotion. Take time for service. As you do, rest in the goodness and graciousness of the God who grants us the blessed work of summertime church.

Grace and Peace,
